Teaching Welsh through story telling
After a pitch win, our first project with the Education and School Improvement Service (ESIS) was about finding a way to speak the same language as Welsh teachers. At the same time, we had to grab – and hold – the attention of primary school children.
ESIS encourages fresh, fun ways of learning. And that was behind their plan for an interactive toolkit supporting Welsh language teachers. We turned to the drawing board – or rather the blackboard – to design teaching aids inspired by storytelling, games and quizzes. The result was the Foundation Phase Bilingualism Story Pack.
Fully illustrated with entirely Welsh copy, the Story Pack was a labour of love – with Icon as the project management ‘lynch pin’. Illustration took a full two weeks per book. In that time, we worked closely with copywriters. And we sourced suppliers and manufacturers who could bring our ideas to life, on budget and on schedule. It was all worth it when we – and our client – saw the 12 finished books.
“I can’t begin to tell you how impressed we are with the result. We’re on the second day of the training today and both groups have been amazed by the pack – its look, its feel and the overall quality of the finished product.”
