Here at Icon, we love a good logo. We also like nothing more than a home-grown game of rugby. So we leapt at the chance to design a fresh identity for Welsh Varsity.
Our brief was to capture the spirit of this annual ‘grudge’ match. What better way to symbolise that than a logo depicting the dragon and the swan – two symbols of the great Welsh universities involved?

Varsity, arguably the biggest student sporting event in Wales.
When Cardiff University and Swansea University traditionally line up against one another to do battle for the coveted Varsity Cup everyone wants a front row seat, or else make first choice team selection. For one week, all manner of sports for students are squeezed in, with every match point counting.
And the finale? The annual ‘grudge’ rugby match, an adrenaline-filled, crowd-roaring show of strength between the red and the green gives us the winner, but with plenty of friendly rivalry.
Established in 1997, Welsh Varsity is now the second biggest student Varsity competition in the UK behind Oxford and Cambridge, bringing two areas of Wales together for sport.
